It's not. The lives it can save, the cures it can produce are worth a few stem cells.

stem cells are the developing cells in an embryo. They are called stem cells because they haven't yet "figured out" what kind of cell they are going to be and can still become any type of cell. As far as I know, the only place to get stem cells is from a developing embryo, although that may not still be true. Also I do know that once you have one (or a few) you can use them to culture more, though I don't really know how that works.

Murder is the illegal killing of a person usually with malice and aforethought. Stem cell research does not kill a person (an embryo/fetus is not a person), it is not done with malice and aforethought, and it is legal.

The stem cells that are at the center of this controversy are embryonic stem cells (there are other sources such as umbilical cord blood and bone marrow). People who are against abortion are typically against embryonic stem cell research because they feel that an embryo is equivalent to a child or person, thus to them killing the embryo is murder (thought it is technically not).

Because they have the frankly utterly moronic idea that a microscopic blob of human tissue should be considered a full person and deserves the same ethical consideration as one.
