He has a large hard bump on his arm, it is hot to touch and quite painful. He says he only noticed it today, and he hadn't injured it today. Although 2 days ago at the park he fell off the monkeybars onto this arm and it had hurt him at the time. Any ideas ??

its on the forearm, between the elbow and the shoulder, it's the width of his arm (he's 7) and about 2 inches long. I am taking him to the doctor soon, waiting for a ride there, but am just wondering for my own peice of mind in the mean time.

He could have a hairline or greenstick fracture and/or a sub-periosteal hematoma. The latter is a collection of blood between the bone and the overlying dense tissue. He probably needs an x-ray.

If he runs a fever, think of infection, possibly an abscess. This is not common, but not rare, either. Get immediate medical attention for this.

Most likely scenario: a non-displaced fracture. If bump persists or gets bigger, ask doctor whether biopsy is in order.

Could be a staph infection! Not really a big deal, but it will probably require anti-biotics for 10 days if it is that. If more bumps develop, it's almost certainly just that. Highly infectious.

He needs to be evaluated. If its painfull sowllen and hot to the touch it could be fractured or have a infection.

It could be a spider bit him - not a black widow or anything like that - just a little 'ole spider.
