Some people start in childhood, and some never do it at any age. There is a large range of "normal" and it really doesn't matter. Don't start just because your friends tell you to. Don't let your friends talk you out of starting. It's a private matter, and when/if you start to do it is nobody else's business. And if you feel no need to do it, that's also nobody else's business. It's a way to relieve sexual tension without a partner; it's not a contest!

People can masturbate from birth, as soon as they discover that it feels good. Usually the start around the beginning of puberty, when hormones start giving them erections, but 9 or so isn't uncommon.

There is no set age to start. I'd say 12 is normal. Many men do it even after they're married.
