Make it a race! Say "Let me see who can do this the fastest, etc"... They're always up for a challenge! Or if you want them to help you stack chairs or something... say "I need some volunteers.... ONLY big, strong helpers, no one else need apply". They love competition. Bet your 5 year old that you can do something faster than they can and watch how fast they'll come running to help you! Afterward, reward them with high-fives or compliment them on their skills. Let them hear you compliment them in front of someone else, and they'll develop a sense of pride in their work and will always want to help you do it. Hope this helps!

I actually had a hard time getting my son to help with the chores. I had to make it fun for him at first. For example, when doing the laundry I would playfully cover him in clothes and we would make a game out of putting the clothes in the washer. Then I would be sure the give him a lot of praise saying "what a great helper you are" or "thank you so much for helping mommy". When it comes to cleaning his room, I have to help him pick up a little bit, but i have to tell him where to put things or say "can you pick up this book and put it on the bookshelf" or "can you help me put these dirty clothes in the laundry basket". I think at first I had to bribe him a little bit by playing a game when the chore was finished. Now, he just turned 4 and he gets mad if I don't let him help with laundry or cooking dinner. It helps if you kind of make it a habit for them to do their chore(s) on a consistent basis, but start out small.

Teach her to do chores. You will have to supervise him/her at first because children get easily distrated but it's time well-invested because eventually you will have a child that is used to helping around the house.
Supervise by giving simple instructions and then be prepared to stick around for awhile to help your child carry out the commands, or to remind them of the task at hand.
You can help out a little, too, but let them do most of the work. Don't ever let them start making a new mess until they clean up the last one! LOL
You can give small rewards or incentives like gold stars on a chart, or saying "as soon as you finish picking up your toys we will read a story....or have a snack, etc."

it sounds like you people use your kids to get out of doing your own chores. it's great to teach them but at 5 they should still be having fun not doing chores becuase your to lazy to do your own chores.

Reward her/him. She could earn a piece of candy or a toy from the dollar store. Set up a chart & she gets to put a sticker on it every time she does a chore.

Discipline and consequences if he doesn't help. Like, take away TV time or a favorite toy if he doesn't help picking up after himself. What my mom (and many other moms i'm sure) did was threaten to throw out all my toys that were on the floor. I wouldn't take her seriously, but she would get a black trash bag and start throwing them in and then put it outside next to the garbage can. I and my sister would cry and promise her that we would always pick up our toys and then she would give them back.

Make a game of it. Give her/him their own little broom and dust pan, their own duster. Put them in a special spot that they know it's just theirs. A kitchen timer works wonders, turn it on for 5 minutes, she has to pick up toys, whatever for that amount of time.....help her and see who can pick up the most in that amount of time. I did this with my 5 sons and they were really good about picking up.............until they were teenagers.....and became slobs LOL :)
