My daughter will happily drink juice and water all day long but the moment I hand her a sippy cup of milk, she turns her nose up at it. I know that calcium intake is very important especially at her age, and I do try to provide calcium-rich foods as much as I can (yogurt, cottage cheese, etc.), as well as calcium-supplemented juices, but I know that they're no substitute for good ol' milk. I don't want to flavor the milk with chocolate or anything like that b/c that will just train her to an even bigger sweet tooth and she'd likely NEVER drink plain milk. She was breastfed for her first year, not formula-fed. I still nurse once a day, and I know she prefers that to cow's milk. But it's time completely wean her and I'm just concerned that she is not getting adequate calcium. Suggestions? Thanks. :)

Cow's milk is not an essential part of the human diet. It was made for the system of a baby cow, not people, and is known to have many negative effects on health. If you are providing other sources of calcium, dont worry.

There is no need to replace your perfect milk meant for human baby with a cow's imperfect milk meant for calfs. Oh my gosh!! Your body provides all that baby needs. And contrary to popular belief (of course provided by the milk industry) vegans in america and foreigners who do not drink cow's milk only ingest about 200 mg of calcium a day and have far less cases of osteoporosis compared to avid cow's milk drinkers. In addition, recent studies have proclaimed that the less human milk an infant/ toddler drinks, the more nutrients found per serving compared to when child exclusively breastfed. This is to give child all the nutrients she needs, in less sittings. Which debunks the myth the breastfeeding is no longer nescessary after age one and only good for comfoting. Nature is perfect and mixing things up by giving a human milk from another species is against all that nature intended!! And of course your breastfed child wouldn't like the milk from another species, as it tastes disgusting compared to what you provide. Please don't feel a need to push it onto your child as you and you milk are perfect for her!!

I wouldn't push it. Especially if she's still nursing, I would let her drink water if she's happy with it. Remember that green veggies are full of calcium too.

Why is it time to wean her? Especially since she doesn't like cow's milk, why not just keep on nursing? My baby is almost 2 and she's still nursing happily

Kudos for nursing for so long--great job!

Sounds like she is getting aadequate calcium.. if your really concerned go see a nutritionist after writting down EVERYTHING she eats and drinks for 3 days (including ammounts - weigh it all!!)

I'd be more worried about her drinking juice.

My son turned his nose up at plain milk so i put food colouring in it... funny but worked :)

good luck

From what I understand, if you are making sure that your child is getting other calcium rich foods, milk is not such a great concern. Leafy greens and broccoli are good sources.

Talk to your pediatrician and ask him/her. They will know exactly what to do in your situation.

Try soy milk. Soy milk mimics breast milk much better than cow's milk, plus it does not contain all of the hormones that cow's milk has. Plus, it just as much calcium as cow's milk. I started my son on it at about 14 months old and he still enjoys it at 3 yrs old!

I don't really give my daughter milk, and when she does drink milk or eat it with cereal i give her soymilk, the vanila flavored and she loves it, it has just as much calcium, maybe you should give it a try, maybe milk is not appealing to her taste buds. plus if she's eating cheese, she's consuming enough, milk is overrated.

my step-mother is a nutritionist and she says the average adult shouldn't consume more than 1-2 cups of milk a day, and she recomends not giving toddlers cows milk if they don't like it!
i think your daughter will be fine... just talk to her pediatrician about this

others are correct

it is a total scam amd myth that we need milk to be healthy

give her calcium veggies instead

and why oh why are americans convinced that we should give cows milk over our own species specific milk???....keep nursing her

forget the cow
