Is PHX the best airport to take?
What is there to do? I've heard about
the hiking trails and it's mostly what I
want to see. Are there cabin lodges or
just plain old hotels?

I JUST GOT BACK FROM THERE...lol

It was beautiful.

They have a website so you can see the trails.

There are visitor centers, lodges, shops a post office, mule rentals all kinds of stuff at the top.

And if I remember correctly, you can also stay in a hotel at the bottom!

We actually drove there from LA...we went to Flagstaff and stayed there and then took a day trip to the grand canyon via the 89A North.

Here's some links that helped me.

El Tovar is one of the lodges to stay at...and it's beautiful.

Take a camera and take tons of film. It truely is amazing.

Have Fun!!

Actually Las Vegas [ LAS ] is probably your best and cheapest airport to use.
The driving distance LAS >GCN is 267.88 mi
PHX>GCN is 224.89 miles
So the round trip difference is only 86 miles or about $12.00 in gas which can easily be made up in getting a less expensive flight to LAS and so on.
If you leave LAS early and beat traffic over Hoover Dam then your time to GCN may be the same as the time from PHX to GCN.
The reason being that the is a lot less climbing involved in going from LAS to GCN.
GCN is not my own personal shorthand ,it's an airport code for Grand Canyon Airport which is located under 5 miles from the S.Rim entrance station
Scenic Airlines -code YR - from LAS to GCN takes about 1 hour each way and costs about $ 300.00 round trip . It's also a really nice flight.Just tell them that you want the ride only, not the tour after you land.
Scenic will provide transport to the Rim.
As far as hiking the Inner Canyon goes ,I strongly suggest that it not be done until after October 1st
If you absolutely must hike into it ,stay above the base of the Hermit Formation which is usually around 1200-1400' below Rim

Phoenix Sky Harbor airport IS the best one to arrive in. You'll need to rent a car for the 6 hour trip to the Canyon. There ARE various lodgings in the area (you can dig THEM up- Online), and there's TONS of hiking, rafting, & jeep tours in the area (the trainride between Williams & the Canyon- is pretty cool- too). Those can be found Online- also. I CAN tell you this; you're GOING to have a terrific time, -because it's an AWESOME place! :)

If you plan to hike down into the canyon and camp, you'll need reservations, and they'll need to be made quite a while in advance.

There are motels and lodges in the area. Phoenix is the closest international airport, but there are smaller ones in various towns nearer to the canyon.
