That's rather a broad generalization to make. Not all men do prefer "stupid" girls to smart ones.
Usually, men are initially attracted to a woman's appearance. That's just natural. However, appearance will only get you so far. If two people have little in common, don't share the same values, or have nothing to talk about, it's unlikely the relationship will last.
There's no question that some men are intimidated by smart women. But not all. Some, I dare say most, men will ultimately prefer a woman with whom they can talk openly about a variety of subjects and who he feels understands him.

Men actually prefer a woman who is knowledgeable in some manner, but like to avoid those who only think they are knowledgeable. Seems there's a lot of the second kind answering this question.
BTW the stupid ones aren't easier to be with or manage, as many so erroneously state. Try being around one for any amount of time and it makes your head hurt.

I prefer smart men. Being smart myself, I need that intellectual stimulation - debates, arguments, discussions. I couldn't be with the stereotypical muscular, idiotic type because it would drive me insane that he wouldn't satisfy my appetite for stimulating conversation. But if a woman isn't that intellectually inclined herself, she may prefer the muscular and dumb type because she sees him as her equal. Just a thought. She might feel intimidated by the thought of dating a smart man because she does not want to feel inferior. Or, conversely, she may want to feel superior and hold more intellectual power in the relationship, so she can exercise control and be the dominant partner. Does that answer your question?

Boys prefer to look superior to their women.
At least they do when they are younger. Myself I am middle aged and I prefer a woman as smart as I am. A pair of nice breasts are beautiful, but have you ever tried to have a conversation with them? (Jiggle once for yes, twice for no.)
As the male matures and gets more confident they are better able to handle a woman who is their equal or even a little superior. But, I am talking about the Western Culture. In some areas like the Middle East the woman HAS TO BE INFERIOR to the man. It is a cultural requirement.
I know a woman who has a problem with many men from her culture seeing her as competition, because she doesn't fit into the Asian Woman stereotype. She is as smart as I am (we both have an I.Q. of 125) and wants to be a doctor. We have had an Internet romance and it is getting serious. If she got a job she would make more money than I do, because I am disabled, but I would be comfortable with that. What I really like about her is that she VALUES me for who I am, warts and all.
When a successful man leaves his “starter” wife for the second wife, the trophy wife; then he demands her to be lesser than he is. He wants to be superior and her job is to only look good on his arm and to give him great sex, for as long as he can perform. This is a perversion of the normal attitude that comes from a man who is too rich and spoiled.

It seems the immature whens fall for those types. It's a stupid and inaccurate fact that the stupid girls are the ones who seem to be stupid and the smart one's seem to be the awkward, ugly ones.

Because it gives them an inflated sense of self-worth to be the all-knowing, all-powerful figure in the relationship. No, it's not just the young men who prefer this, but men who cannot deal with a woman who is stronger than them.

Give me an intelligent girl any day. I'd rather have a conversation about something intelligent than some vapid person who cares for nothing other than popularity and her looks.
I think you may be picking up on the steriotype that all beautiful women are stupid - it's not so - at least not all the time.

I don't think most men do want a stupid women. The only ones I have met who pick stupid girls are those that are insecure about their own "brain capacity"
