You don't say who "they" are, or which service is involved.

Sergeants, or NCOs, or (in the Navy) petty officers do basically keep the services running. Anyone with any amount of military service knows this.

I retired as a field grade officer from the Air Force, but I served a few years enlisted in my early years. As a junior officer my enlisted experience helped, but it was really the NCOs who saved my @$$ more than once.

I do hope whoever concocted this harebrained scheme to downsize NCO slots is someone who never served--I would hate to think anyone who ever served in uniform would believe the services would run better with fewer sergeants.

I don't favor eliminating any grades either enlisted or officer, and I don't think that is what the question addresses. I believe the policy is aimed at UMD or UDL positions, not pay grades.

There is nothing to be gained by eliminating any pay grades, as another form of graduated pay scale would have to replace them, and these generally don't save money or training costs.

The Army may feel that replacing lower grade NCO positions with more specialists may help them manage their work better. I don't think anyone in any service believes that. I note the Navy recognizes the need for enlisted leadership even in the most highly specialized career fields. Leaders are grown, not born.

Not out of their minds, just having the wrong priorities. It's what
happens when you put beancounters in charge of Defense.

They'd probably outsource whole formations if they thought they could get away with it. Not that I'd mind seeing Chinese or Indians dying instead of our kids. But it raises some pretty scary issues about loyalties.
