my 19in. lcd monitor came from factory with resolution set at 1280/800 @60hz, and I reset it to 1280/1024 @70hz.
1280/800 is fine for movies and adaquite for gaming, probably the most important thing regarding ur monitor for moving objects on ur moniture is pixel rate change. That's how fast the pixels change colors. My monitor tho fine for t.v and just o.k.for games has a pixel change rate of 16pps. most t.v.s are aroun 4, what u need is a monitor with pixel change rate between 4 and 8. What happens with the slower rates is when objects move across ur screen they will shadow or slur the images

The resolution has nothing to do with the power of the computer processing the games/movies. All resolution is the clarity of the picture and how many pixels on the scree will be used for a particular item. That is why lower resolution has larger icons on the desktop. You can change this at any time right click on your desktop and choose properties on the general tab you can change your resolution settings.
You need to look at the processing power for gaming and movie play. Look for a Dual Core processor and a Video Card that has at least a 256mb on board memory. This is the minimum specs for a gaming/home media computer.

The resolution affects two things when gaming. The sharpness of your image and the amount of work your video card has to do. Find the happy medium of the highest resolution you can with not overtaxing your video card.

YES, as long as it is supported by a good graphics card. Most graphics cards are good on video but those that just share memory from system RAM are the slow ones. Those with its own videoRAM tend to be the faster ones in games.
