First I have to disagree with you on the quality. Second are you one of those persons who complain that all the good manufacturing jobs are going overseas? And there are no good paying jobs left here? Maybe it is your driving habits and scheduled maintenance, as stated I have had no problem with American made cars and will continue to buy them. Upside down in car debt, not the manufacturers fault, but yours, don't finance for 100% and over and you will not have that problem. All cars lose value after driving them off the lot.

My mom bought a 2007 Toyota Camry, made in America, in May 2006. That car was a piece of garbage. It would lose power on the highway when trying to pass, when trying to turn left, and sometimes at random times. I don't think it is necessarily just American cars that are piles of junk. When cars are build to 'American standards', they either build a car that's lousy or they make a good one lousy. Remember the Cadillac Catera? It was the Opal and Vauxhall Omega in Europe and Australia. When Cadillac 'Americanized' it, they mushed the suspension, over assisted the steering, and had it geared wrong for North American conditions. No wonder it didn't sell well.
American car companies lack creativity and new products. The way of the future is smaller, more fuel efficient, lighter vehicles. Then why do American companies keep building huge gas-guzzlers? Burning ethanol is no advantage either. Then you lose a third of your fuel economy on a car that already uses too much.
For me, I would buy Japanese cars that are of Japanese design. There are a few left. Many so-called Japanese cars (like my mom's Camry) are made and designed for America. Something of international design and may be built in North America like the Toyota Yaris, Honda Civic [number 1 selling vehicle in Canada for the last decade or so], or Suzuki SX4 would be nice economical vehicles.
When people complain that their family won't fit into a smaller car, maybe the problems is that the people are obese. Lose weight, buy a smaller car, burn less gas, and slow global warming!
I personally am setting my life up so that I don't need a car. I am going to walk to work or take the bus. No gas, no insurance, no car payment, and no repairs to pay for. I figure it will save me about $1000/month.

1.Support the Jobs of fellow americans
2. Need and want the room and comfort of the larger american cars. A normal daily LA comute is longer than a european drives in a week .
3. Our roads are wider and straighter than europe and asia so dont need as much maneverability. Even in cities of the east, traffic and parking are far more amenable. Try driving in Madrid, Tokyo, or rome!!
4. Cost for all the above much less than european and asian cars of comperable size. Try to find a large 5 passenger AWD foreign car for less than 65K1 (I have, and you can't)
5. Dealers and repair shops are everywhere close by. Try to find a Benz or Infinity dealer in Kansas without driving 250 miles.
6.As long as gas is less than $5.00/gal, don't expect to see the end of American cars as we know them.
7. If you have to keep a car for 150,000 miles , OK but I get bored with the same car and want improvements every 5 years or so.
