How long before it paid for itself?

Yes I would, as well as making sure my room was locked, or the fridge was.
As to how soon it paid for itself it would depend on how much you paid, and how much food you were loosing. Like if you bought $40.00 of food and he took around $20.00 worth each week, then if the fridge was $200 it would pay for itself in 10 weeks, (plus electricity).
I think its so rude for someone to take the other's things just because they share a place.
The other alternative is to charge him/her half of your grocery bill. Maybe that way they would understand its not FREE.

Been there. My roomies did that too. I put in a mini fridge, very handy. But then I realized I was just plain sick of roommates so I moved out and found a much better place to live.

You might want to. This seems to be an eternal problem with roommates, so I should think that it would pay for itself pretty quickly.
Not going hungry is also a good investment. Priceless. ; )

Buy a biiiiiig bag of sugar free gummy bears and casually leave them on the counter.

No, you don't need to waste money again. Just tell him not to eat your food. If he still does it, just take his good clothes and go for a jog, don't wash them after that.

Yes put one in and give the roomie a bill for the food he has eaten. In the long run instantly!!!!!!!!!!!!
