Turn off the water supply to the toilet. It is valve on the supply line which runs under the tank.

Push the plunger in the tank down so that it stop running into the toilet.

Toilet Flooding

There are two possibilities here. One is that the toilett floods because it is plugged in which case a if a plunger doesn't fix it you will need to remove the toilet. Not difficult. 1.shut off the tap at the toilet (shut off) and remove the water supply pipe from the toilet (an easy to remove nut). 2. Remove the two bolts at he bottom of the toilet and lift the whole toilet to move it aside while you remove what is plugging it. 3. you may need a new wax seal before you replace the toilet and bolt it back down. 4 reconnect the water line to the shut off. 4. turn the shut off on and test the toilet.

If this was not the problem and instead you have the toile overflowing when other water appliances are used, mostly upstairs, then you have a more serious problem. Your sewer is plugged. You will need either for yourself or for a plumber to use a "snake" which is a router to clear the line. You or he would need access which could be from the hole where the toilet can be removed or there usually is a "clean out" for this purpose. A clean out is a pipe fitting usually prominently visible and with a large nut on the surface which when removed offers access to the sewer line(for the snake).

First and foremost, turn the water off to the toilet. Look under the toilet for the valve. Second, go buy a plunger and plunge the toilet. If that does not work, you can get a snake that connects to a drill and try to snake it out. If that does not work, you will have to call a plumber. Good luck!
