Teams like to put their best hitter in the three slot and another good hitter behind him in the four slot. If you have a real good hitter hitting behind you the other team might not want to give you an intentional walk. That has been one of the big problems with the Giants the past few years by not having a really solid player to back up Bonds. It used to be Jeff Kent when he was there but the really have no one now.

These players are called impact players because they make an impact. The manager wants them to bat in the 1st inning, so they can set the tone early. If they bat 4th, there is no guarantee that they will bat in the 1st inning. Why not bat 1st? That's because when the 1st and 2nd guys get on base, the impact player can drive them home. Also, on average, the top of the lineup usually bats in the 8th and/or 9th innings as well.

You tend to see better pitches if you hit in the 3 hole as opposed to cleanup. Pitchers like to through a lot of off speed, and junk to a clean up hitter. Another reason is that if the 1 and 2 batters get out the third batter is typically someone who can get the hits started, and start and start a two out rally if need be.

The Best hitter in the luneup usually bats third.
If you bat fourth thier is NO garuentee you will bat that inning.
And that explains why Ortiz and Pujols bat 3rd.

Better pitches to see if the #4 hitter is worth his weight (Manny Rameriz)....they will get more at bats diring the game, not only will they hit in the first inning, often they are hitting in the ninth when the game is on the line

Because the manager of the team is making a logical line up.
If your power hitter bats 4 their is NO guarantee he will be up in the 1st inning. The manager wants to set a tone in the game by scoring fast and often. And the managers think that a grand slam is nice, but they don't worry about them.

Probably because the coach will want to get them batting in the first inning despite having anybody on base. And they also have the chance if the 9-2 batters get on he has them all juiced.

well im from boston and i can tell you about him. He bats third because if he bat 4th they could intentionally walk him and get away with it but if he bats third and they intentionally walk him than you have a batter just as powerful in manny ramirez up to the plate with a man on first.
