A thanks would be appropriate, yeah. Especially if the asker chose your answer out of - let's say - 50 answers. Now that takes a lot of patience to check each one of them and then pick THE ONE. :)
So just say "thanks", ya know, for the effort :)

I always thank someone for choosing mine as best answer. I think it is the nice thing to do since I am up 10 more pts.

It's 50/50. I think more people just read what's on the page. I always thank them when I select them. When you send an email, sometimes they think you're hitting on them.

It's not a requirement but I do it. Just say thanks in the "Add Comments" section underneath the Best Answer.
