I'm gonna go out on a limb and say they eat algae... But if there isn't enough algae in the tank (which there shouldn't be). You can buy algae wafers at the pet store. Drop 2 in the tank. One in the morning, and one after you turn off the lights for the night. They will also eat most fresh fruits and vegetables like cucumber, apples, grapes, zuchini, broccoli, and bananas.

Fish that are called algae eaters can't live off of algae and actually don't like to eat it. They also make more waste then most fish.
I feed mine (who's rather large) fresh veggies, frozen blood worms, and frozen brine shrimp, he also gets little round pellets that are made just for that kind of fish.
Keep in mind that if you take good care of yours, many of that kind of fish can easily grow up to two feet long in just a few short years.

algae eaters are bottom feeders... they eat algae, of course, but also eat bits of food dropped by other fish. if they never the waterwould get foul pretty quickly. if there isnt enough algae, etc, for it to scavenge maybe you could see that gets some fish food.

that will happen.
your type is unkown, is it a CAE or a common pleco. both are common and under3 dollars. shame really as both arent for the common fishkeeper.
I any case, fish food like algae waffers are best, they will eat that and before you go to bed, add one or two to the tank and they will eat that.
