If you will NOT always be bringing your laptop to class, get one w/ a big screen. Otherwise get a small one for mobility and longer battery life.

I am a junor in college and I have a both a 17" and a 14.1" laptop. I bought the 14.1" computer thinking that I would use it in class, but it is just opposite. I really never use that computer unless I fly home for a couple of days. So if I had to do it again I would have just bought the best 17'' computer that I could have afforded then. So saying this if I were you I would get the 15.4"

First off, you have to know what you want out of your laptop.
Since you said you want to carry it around, don't look at the screen size -- check how much each laptop weighs. Bigger screen doesn't necessarily mean that it's heavier.
I have a Lenovo X60 Tablet, a Sony Vaio, a Compaq, a Dell XPS M1210, and a Toshiba -- All have different screen size.
12.1" for Dell (Widescreen)
12.1" for Lenovo (Fullscreen)
17" for Toshiba (Widescreen)
13.3" Sony Vaio (Widescreen)
14.1" Compaq
I use my Dell for games and school work and I have no problem reading from the screen. It's the same for all of the laptops I have. It all depends on the number of pixels the screen supports -- the greater, the better it looks.
The smallest one out of all my laptops, Dell, is not the lightest one. Lenovo is a little bigger because it's not widescreen, but it's much lighter. The toshiba, however is too heavy to carry. The sony one is portable enough but it can get a little heavy when carrying it around for a long time.
So what I'm saying is, 15.4" and 14.1" aren't that much different at all. What you should look for which one is lighter.
Also, since you're using it for games, better make sure that you get at least a 2 GB RAM so games don't lag.

I prefer the 14.1 size because of portability. It also uses less battery power. The screen size is not tiny. You can always get an external monitor to use at home.

Generally speaking your best deal is the model that was just replaced. That way you aren't paying top dollar for some new gadget. I'd go for the lighter model. In college you may find that your dorm roommate will have a PC and you can swap files. You may even want to pick up a used PC for yourself just to play games on to protect the data on your school work. They are pretty cheap.

Get a 14.1 since it's easier to get around and it's not heavy to carry around. :)
