Almost every European had a colony in Africa. The British had India and most of the West Indies as colonies. The French have Guadeloupe and Martinique in the Caribbean.
Colonialism has a very long history.

I will give you a non- political correct example. a colonial system as was created by the muslim conquest of north Africa, and in the process eradicated all the local population, it's history, traditions, religion and even all traces of existence. The complete extermination of the natives means that the colonisation is permanent, providing not only instant profit (pillage and sale of slaves) but also a stepping stone for further conquests
