Texas Cowboy is right. Being a commuter school in an area that is not very vibrant gives the school a dead feeling much of the time. Then being in such a dead city does not help either. Sure there are organizations but the school has seen a 2.4 decrease in enrollment since 2004. You won't find a vibrant social scene like the University of Texas or Texas A & M.
It's a good school nonetheless with good departments and such but I felt that my experience could have been better.
The school is working on a project called "The Master Plan" to help combat the decreasing enrollment. This project will feature more restaurants, integrated student housing, an ampitheater, a rail system that connects to the Galleria ect.
Why is Houston starting all of these projects so late? This should have been done years ago. Here is a link that discusses the "Master Plan".

I went to the school there as a commuter. I missed out on a lot of the things on campus other than my classes.
However, I did notice there were things to do on campus that I did get involved with. They have sports teams that are some of the better college teams in the country. (If you like soccer, the Houston Dynamo play at Robertson stadium on campus.) My department was always having get togethers. They have a campus newspaper with all kinds of things to do.
And if you did not find something on campus, you are only minutes from downtown.

I just transfered there so I can't say too much.
But I do know that everyone is very friendly and helpful! I also have a few friends that have been there longer and love it! There seem to be groups for everyone... just go visit, walk around and see how it feels to you.
I was trying to choose between downtown campus and main... I liked the feel of main campus a lot better.
My advice is to visit... a lot... that's the only way you know if YOU will like it or not!

It is a commuter's school and located in a bad area of town. It is cheap but not much of a social place to be.
