They are two different names for the same thing. A hurricane occurs in the Atlantic. A typhoon occurs in the Pacific. Typhoon is an anglicized Chinese word.

No; they are the local names for the same type of storm.They form over oceans between latitude 10 degrees and 30 degrees N and S along the inter- tropical convergence zone and are known as hurricanes in America,Typhoons in China,Japan and Phillipines, Willy-Willies in Australia and cyclone in India.They do not develop closer than 6 to 7 degrees to the equator as the earth's deflective force is very weak here to introduce a whirling motion.
