Harry might be a bit much for him
Try these two instead:

If he has injoyed the Inkheart trilogy, then by all means he would be ready to read Harry Potter.
He might also like The Thief and Beans Stalk and The Warlocks Eye - both by the same author. They were a lot of fun and both my older daughters enjoyed them last winter when they were nine and eleven.
Another Fav is The Wall and the Wing. I enjoyed this one as much as they did.
There is also a series : Raising Dragons, Candle stone and Ring of Seven.
The Fire Within and Ice fire are both part of an awesome trilogy (we haven't read te third one yet. Its really well done and has Dragons.
Cornelia Funke also has Dragon Rider.
If he is a really advanced reader, then Eragon is a definite read.
Hope these help.

The harry potter book would most definently make the best book for a nine year old child. I never liked reading but as soon as picked up the harry potter book, I could not stop reading it. Book after book, my reading improved and I started to enjoy reading. When the last book arrived I could not wait a second and when I finally got it, I finished it in two days( I read about 12 hours a day). Now I continue to explore the wonderful world of reading and extending my knowledge to such mesures that you might not imagine( just joking but I really am still reading). So I hope this helped and enjoy finding the perfect book for that special nine year old child.
Bye!!!

Harry Potter might be all right, at least the 1st books. I understand that as the books grow more complex, they aren't as appropriate for the younger set (tho I could be wrong)
Try the Narnia books, Wizard of Oz (Baum wrote 14 Oz titles), & Peter Pan (very different from the Disney movie)

"Warriors" by Erin Hunter. There is a whole series of these books. It's a magical fantasy about cats. My son and his friends loved these books.
