A new poll out today finds that fifty-five percent said they trust congressional Democrats on the war, compared with 32 percent who said they trust Bush. In addition, by 2 to 1, Americans said Congress, rather than the president, should make the final decision about when to withdraw U.S. forces from Iraq.
How should the Democrats in Congress proceed? Your thoughts?

Steelegrave, read the article! 55% of Americans trust Congressional Democrats on the Iraq war versus 32% who trust Bush. That’s not spin. That’s the poll result.

It’s hardly surprising that the American public trusts the Democrats more. The Bush administration has misled us and invaded Iraq for reasons that are not entirely clear.
Contrary to assertions above, Congress has broad war powers. Not only is funding in their hands, but they have the responsibility to declare war and they have extensive powers under the “Necessary and Proper” clause of the Constitution.
I think Americans are looking to the Democrats to get us out of this mess in Iraq because it is obvious that Bush wants to stay until the end of his presidency. Iraq may not become stable for many years to come but that is something that Iraqis have to work out themselves. The continuing cost in lives and taxpayers’ money is just not acceptable.

Polls come and polls go, but the Constitution remains.
So that being said, the President is the Commander in Chief and has the final say on what, where and how to deploy our military, however; if congress really believes it knows better, then they have the option of NOT funding the war!
Now here is where the politics begin, because everyone wants to be the hero and no one wants to be the bad guy. So congress won't pull funding because Bushes spin will be that they don't support our troops, since they won't give them the money to allow them to do their jobs.
So here is where it takes conviction, if they truly believe their own rhetoric they should take the hit in popularity. It will most likely be a short term hit, because if they stand their ground and not fund the war effort (aka the troops) then the President will have no choice but to bring them home.
But it will be ugly, and it won't happen immediately, because the politics must take their course. So after several months of noise going back and forth someone will have to cave.
So if Democrats truly believe that we should bring the troops home before as some believe they have not won. Then that’s what they will have to do.

What we need to do is stay away from party lines, discuss the issues and go from there, for every problem that some would lay at the feet of the Republicans, there is another that can be laid at teh feet of the Democrats.
I hate the fact that we are at war and am somewhat of an outspoken opponent of the war, however, I still vote Republican. I think I may well fal into that old category of being a Reagan Democrat...:)

The only way would be for the Democrats to get an Amendment to the Constitution passed that would do away with the Executive branch of the govt. and put all power in the Legislative branch. This is impossible and wouldn't work anyway. See France 1790's or Russia 1920. Idon't advocate such anarchy- I'm just pointing it out.

What you left out was the previous poll and the difference showing that the Democrats position is faltering. The Dems control the polls. How many in here have ever been contacted by poll takers? They have the same people that they call everytime. The poll takers are shocked that the American people are beginning to see things a little more clearly than what the Democrats have tried pushing down thier throats.

Nice attempt to spin it, but that isn't what the poll says. The American people think the President is intransigent on changing the course of the war. Do you know what that means? They believe he is unwilling to change course in the war that he is inflexible and thus if the course of this war is to change then the Congress will have to instigate that change.
It doesn't mean that Americans trust the Democrats on running the war no matter how you try to spin it.
I read the article and I saw the poll and it doesn't support your argument.
