It looks like you and I are on the same quest. I hope this small list can help you.
1. Bernard Cornwell books (not his Sharpe series)
( The Last Kingdom Series, The Archer's tale, Vagabond, Stonehendge)
2. The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Stterfield (Gothic novel)
3. Water For Elephants by Gruen (last name) Wonderful little book!
4. The Stolen Child (forgot author) about "changelings'
5. Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Piccoult (interesting perspective wait for paperback)
6. The Best of Roald Dahl (short stories way before his time for adults= great read for an airplane ride)
I could go on forever. I hope I helped.

Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz for the plane ride. There's also a couple of series about alternate history by an author by the name of Harry Turtledove. One of them is a two-book series where it explores what would happen if Japan had invaded Pearl Harbour instead of attacking and moving on.
The second one is an 8-book series about what would happen if aliens invaded the planet during WWII and spans all the way to the future (I'm guessing about a hundred years from now). Also, the aliens get extremely horny whenever they sniff ginger roots like cocaine. Yeah, I know, it sounds SO lame, but if publishers wanted an 8-book series, it has to be good, and I tend to agree with them. It was a very good read that took me about a year to finish and very hard to put down.

Hocus Pocus by Kurt Vonnegut Jr.
Vonnegut is widely considered on of the best American authors of the twentieth century. He has numerous novel and short story collection. I guarantee once you get started on Vonnegut you will not stop.
He is on of the most "entertaining" and brilliantly satirical authors I have ever read.

If you are into comedy, try the hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy by douglas adams. Also, try the four sequels:
the restaurant at the end of the universe
life, the universe, and everything
so long, and thanks for all the fish
mostly harmless
if you like those, try the strange, wacky detective dirk gently:
dirk gently's holistic detective agency
the long dark teatime of the soul
(also by douglas adams)
great funny books. enjoy!

I don't know if you've read Twilight or New Moon by Stehpanie Meyer (I think that's how you spell her name) But they're amazing! They get you hooked from page one. I strongly reccomend that book.
