Pretty much anything by Stephen King is disturbing. Try reading The Shining, It, Carrie, Pet Semetary, Misery, The Stand. The man has very, very dark thoughts! =)

I have also read some true crime novels that are very creepy and horribly disturbing, especially when you read it knowing that what you are reading truly happened. Go to the true crime section of Barnes and Noble or Borders and look it over, those books are truly disturbing.

As an English major I have read some really disturbing books in my time. However, the MOST disturbing book i have read is also one of the shortest. I mean this one really packs a punch that will remain with you. The Painted Bird by Jersey kozinski (I may have spelled his name wrong as it has been many years since I read it).

Hmm. I'm not old enough to have read a lot of REALLY scary stories. I guess if you mean, like, nightmares for weeks type of thing, Harry Potter is too tame. But it has scary parts. If you want a nightmares-for-weeks book, and you want it to be realistic, I'd say the best way to find one is to ask your local librarian.

The Beast Within by Edward Levi is one of the most disturbing and psychologically demented books I have read. I have never came across anything with the same gut punching style.

There's a disturbing short story (don't know the name) where a man finds a severed head after a car crash and takes it home thinking of it as a friend.
