and steam cleaned and vacuumed up baking soda. I have vacuumed probably 8 times in the last 2 days. What is wrong with this carpet, I don't know what else to do. Everyone has to wear socks in the house or wash your feet before going to bed and such. Anybody else have this problem?

Check all along the walls at the carpet edges. Especially if the bath or kitchen adjoins the room.
Check along the walls in those areas also.
There may be a slow water leak from those and water will crawl along walls and possibly across any unlevel areas. It then would be sufficient to dampen the carpet but not soak it. The wet areas could transfer soil from the backing to the surface, even after cleaning.

Do this.
In the subject areas, place a clear sheet of plastic over it for 24 hours. If water is there you will see condensation under the plastic.

If you are on a concrete slab, it may be hydrostatic pressure, moisture coming up through the slab. If there is no water leak as I mentioned, the plastic should determine if it is hydrostatic pressure. If so, you may have to remove the carpet, spread plastic sheeting, then reinstall the carpet.

Eskie may be also correct. If new, I have seen loom oil to be the culprit.

Is this new carpet? I had a new berber installed in this house by the builder that had a manufacturer's defect, too much loom oil. It felt damp and left a residue on not only our feet, but the legs of our wooden furniture. Even if it is not brand new, check the warranty on the carpet. If it is still under warranty, contact the manufacturer and request that a representative come to your home and inspect it. Steam cleaning it may have brought up some chemical from the backing. Do a quick test by taking a quarter and vigorously rub it in a small area on the carpet. Does a froth appear or does the coin bring up oil or liquid? It could also be coming up from the padding. It may be covered by the warranty if it is a manufacturers defect.

I've vacuumed my carpet 3 times today. And for what? Waste of freakin time. I'm going to start doing the twice a year thing. I am getting kind of tired of white carpet and a color change wouldn't be so bad right now.

Sounds like it is not the carpet that is the problem as much as it is the padding.

Moisture stays in the padding & if you have put too much moisture in while cleaning it - especially if it is humid where you live, the carpet will stay almost wet feeling.

Pull half of your carpet up & check the padding - the carpet is easy enough to put back down.

hmmn, kinda depends I prefer not to tempt the carpet demons from coming out by just scraping the dust into a corner and then planting seeds in it. So far the pumkins are coming along nicely but the tomatoes need a little help it is a win-win situation

You probably need to hire a professional carpet cleaner to bring in their strong machines and suck all of the water out of the carpet. The steam cleaners that you rent and clean the carpet yourself do not have the suction to get all of the water and detergent back out. Therefore, the carpet stays wet and get smelly.

Maybe you have a lot of humidity in the house. If you own a dehumidifier , I would suggest using it.
