Just bought a 2000 883 and it was in the rain yesterday. I drove it to the garage. This morning I tried to start it and no go. Initially the head light was on but when I hit the start button, I got a click/clunk (like a stuck starter motor). The headlight went off and the rest of the bike is dead. At the 30 amp breaker, if I remove the 4 fuses, I have 12 volts. Insterting any fuse and I lose the 12v, remove it and I get the 12V back. Any ideas would be great. Oh, it seems if I wait awhile I get the headlight back but the same deal repeats.

What a great forum. You all pointed to the Battery &/or connections. It was the cable connection. Looks like I'm off to get star washers

Sounds like the battery is dead. Check the battery connections. If the battery is low the starter will just give you a clicking sound. And it could have a problem with the starter relay. Try charging the battery and go from there.
I forgot you said it was a 2000 you just bought. It may have the original battery. If it is it's time for a new one. Good Luck and Congratulations on the new (Used) Sportswear!

Bet it has pretty low miles and the original battery, eh? Motorcycle batteries take a lot of abuse here in the States, because the bikes sit in the garage a lot and the things die from neglect. Try juicing the battery and see what happens. If it comes back to life, time for a new battery.

Invest in a Battery Tender, it will save you aggravation down the road....

Oh, and if you jump start with a car as suggested, make sure the car isn't running - it could fry your electrics!

corrosion on the battery cables will cause hard starting. another reason can be the voltage regulator is about to go south, and a bad ground condition can eventually kill a voltage regulator. btw, that little item is 96 bucks to replace.

clean the 'hot' cable and make sure the connections are tight. if u had the key halfway off, the headlight will shut off, but there's still juice going to other areas. u might need to charge the battery if u did that.

Looks like you got it already. That's good.
If you use star washers, put them under the head of the bolt, not between the cable and battery terminal. Unless they are good stainless steel, they will also cause corrosion.

Check the battery connections.
It may be giving you juice, but when you attempt to fire it up it doesn't have enough connective power from the battery to start it.

i might take one in case you gave it to me. To resell. would not be considered using the factor in possibility of being wrong for a noob poser who's ignorant adequate to pay solid funds for a bike that may not something extra suitable than purely a acceptance.
