The Whistler was one of radio's most popular mystery dramas, from May 16, 1942 until September 22, 1955.

We used to listen to the echo of footsteps... and the eerie voice..... on the radio saying...., "I am the Whistler, and I know many things, for I walk by night. I know many strange tales, many secrets hidden in the hearts of men and women who have stepped into the shadows. Yes, I know the nameless terrors of which they dare not speak."

The mystery stories were the most exciting things I remember.

Edit: a quote from The shadow radio show "Even after decades, the unmistakable introduction from The Shadow, intoned by announcer John Archer, has earned a place in the American lexicon: "Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows!"
