I think it is a symbol of TREASON and SLAVERY. Back during the civil rights movement, klan members used to fly it as a sign of "southern heritage."
If you're so brainwashed as to believe the South seceeded over taxes, read the civil war era documents titled DECLARATION OF SECESSION.

MISSISSIPPI DECLARATION OF CAUSES OF SECESSION
"Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery-- the greatest material interest of the world. Its labor supplies the product which constitutes by far the largest and most important portions of commerce of the earth. These products are peculiar to the climate verging on the tropical regions, and by an imperious law of nature, none but the black race can bear exposure to the tropical sun."

It seems rather hypotically of everyone to sit back and say that slavery was not the sole reason for the Civil War; yet, everyone sit back and say that the Confederate Flag is a symbol of slavery.
Do you realize that New England was talking about sucession from the Union during the War of 1812? A war that many historians have deemed as the "Second War For Independence." Rather two-faced of New England to fight trying to perserve the Union when just 50 years earlier New England were in the process of doing the exact same thing and succeed from the Union. During a war at that. If this is not a treasonous act than what is?

Need I say more. The answers that I received on the question that I asked and the answers here with this question just proves how many hypocrites actually uses this site.
Besides that the Confederate Constitution had abolished all forms of slavery, anyway. So what is the problem here with people in the South of wanting to be proud of their hertiage? The South actually seceeded because the North had over 80% of the roads, 75% of the railroads, and 80% of the canals. Basically, the North had 75% of the wealth and they punished the South by keeping it all for themselves. So before you pass judgment on the Southerns, like myself who do celebrate Southern Hertitage, you might want to grab yourself a history book and read up on the Civil War. You might just be surprised yourself. The internet does not count as a reliable source because anyone can forge information.

Ho hum. No, you can't get me fired for using the word "ho", either. Most people couldn't care less about the confederate flag. Those who get upset about it need to refocus their attention on more important things than a symbol of their perceived and chronic victimhood. Life's too short to concentrate on negatives. Karma's observation that the racism in this country is blatantly one-sided should cause a lot of people to re-think their position on all of those things that serve to separate us and are of no actual benefit to anyone. One of the silliest is Kwanza, which is only celebrated by white school teachers.

It is a symbol no different then MLK Birthday or Columbus day. So what? You need to get out more. The waves from the computer screen have warped you.

I don't like the flag. What are they so proud of? Slavery or rebelling against the US govt? The South was dominated by the big plantation owners and by an elite that kept blacks in slavery and most whites poor. George Will compared the Confederate rebels to the Taliban! Join the 21st century and get rid of the rebel flag!

It was none of what you say.
It evolved from secession from the rest of the union (what, we should all have the same flag?)
I think you should reread the declaration. It only stated that states can do as they please as was originally planned by the federal government.
I am against the very thought of slavery but I am completely against the violations of the constitution that the federal government places on us now.

Like any other symbol, it represents the ideals and the people who put forth those ideals.
And like it or not, many people think the South had every right to secede and to set up their own country and their own laws.
You are perfectly valid calling it a symbol of treason -- by definition, any rebellion or attempted secession is treason. Including our own war of independence against England.
As for slavery, the Constitution enacted in 1781 (70 years earlier) specifically allowed slaves. So, arguably, the south was simply opposing what they saw as unconstitutional.

The Confederate 'battle flag,' the one commonly used by hate groups today, lost its position as a cloth salute of the defeated South once the KKK et al. stole it as their very own symbol. It really isn't completely 'Southern' now--most the Confederate flags waved by neo-Nazis and other unhappy losers were made in China.

When I look at what most people call the "confederate flag" I see what is really the state of Tennessee battle flag during the civil war.
This flag was not the flag of the confederacy, just one state of it.
It reminds me of all of the simple minded fools that are too uneducated to know the difference.
