I personally agree that criminalizing handguns is dumb, and more generally that the 2nd amendment is largely ignored in contemporary statutes.
However, defending handguns is a somewhat tighter corner than defending rifles etc. The text of the 2nd amendment is "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." The presence of the word militia is generally interpreted to mean that weapons are protected only if they would be standard issue in a militia; handguns are usually issued to officers only and thus might not fall within the scope of the 2nd Amendment.

Depends on how you look at the Bill of Rights.

Some see only the 1st Amendment as Free Speech only and the other Amendment abortion on demand should never ever be touch or question.

While others see the 1st (Freedom of Religion and not Freedom from Religion) and the 2nd should never ever be touch or question.

Lastly there is third group who sees the Bill of Rights with all the words and think they should all be given the same respect and not pick and choose.

If people when after abortion rights with the same fury as they do gun control you would see the sparks fly.
Just as when the reverse happens.

I think we need more clam debate on the subject.

Handguns are legal invirtually every state in the union. The second amendment declares the right to keep and bear arms, saying nothing specific about handguns. I don't see much purpose in them myself, but if you want a handgun, go get one. You wil probably need a permit to buy or carry the gun, but that shouldn't be too awfully difficult to obtain.

Law abiding citizens should be allowed to own firearms and carry them if licensed by their state. Studies show over and over that crime rates decrease in jurisdictions where people are permitted to exercise their Second Amendment right.

Cities and states that restrict gun ownership would be better off not restricting this important right. Regardless of the law, criminals will always find guns. Why restrict lawful citizens from their right to defend themselves and their property with deadly force?

Hand guns are legal. Learn to spell. And learn to read too.

They are legal where I am, it's your state law that effects legality.
