Bravo, jared g -- you almost took the words right out of my mouth -- but not quite . . .
There is a discipline called Shihando (Way of the Master), which teaches the alchemy of Reiki (Japanese healing art, means Universal Life Force), Tai-Chi (Chinese healing art, means Universal Life Force) and Kung Fu (means "work man" or "work the body"). All three of these disciplines teach forms based upon geometric shapes, or symbols, found in the Sanskrit Sutras. Each of these shapes has its own electromagnetic energy and is connected to the Universal Life Force in its own vibration. The Kung Fu forms work to clear the energy surrounding the body; the Tai-Chi forms work to enlighten an individual by altering the structure of their energy field to be more attuned to the highest level of consciousness; Reiki is accelerated Tai-Chi. The acceleration is the secret to the alchemy of these disciplines, and I do believe, with time, more practitioners of Shihando will start to have a visible aura that the average "Joe" will be able to see. I further believe that this is the evolution of mankind; the rapture not happening in a given instant, but rather being a process, an evolution in and of itself.
This is not intended to be spam. You can give a thumbs down, but I live this philosophy and believe it with all of my heart and soul.
So yes. Alchemy is very possible.

Unquestionably. And, perhaps the lead to gold metaphor really relates to transforming ones "base" consciousness to one which is , at least, somewhat more enlightened?
There are various schools in the "area"--one of the more interesting is Taoist "internal alchemy" which involves a number of "esoteric practices" revolving around meditation, energy work, and initiatory processes. Easily researched online.
Another path involves DNA reconstruction and "bio-regenisis" methodologies which can be reviewed here--a more Western approach, to some extent--http://www.azuritepress.com and http://www.keylonticdictionary.org :))

Alchemy is changing one substance to another, more than likely, elements. The main goal of alchemists (other than the fountain of youth!)was to create gold. Yes alchemy does exist. The process of fission and fussion are proof, they transform one element to another. Stars are constantly practicing alchemy :P

Knowledge gained from the pseudo-science of alchemy led to the very real sciences of physics and chemistry.

Textbook definition of Alchemy:
Alchemy is the art of transformation and transmutation.
If I take my dirty clothes, transform them into wet clothes with soap, they will be transmuted into clean clothes.
Sorry to kill the mystery for you, but things like Alchemy is nothing more than an archaic system to explains things that were once misunderstood, basic concepts like, how one thing was able to change into something else.
The whole lead into gold thing was based on the theory that if two things have the same molecular structure, we should be able to change one into the other.
Good theory, too bad it fails miserably :)
