While there is no actual evidence available that hair dye is harmful during pregnancy, many practitioners recommend not dying hair in the first trimester when the fetal organs are forming. Processes like highlighting, which don't contact the scalp (unlike hair dye), probably are fine because they don't get into the body.

Yeah - I used brunette ammonia free dye to be on the safe side (castings and loving care - 24 washes), but found it always went an odd colour at the roots. It was more orangey, and not very attractive, so I went back to the hairdresser to go from brunette to blonde to blend in more with my roots. As my roots are mainly pure white, I got bleached highlights with a cap at 24 weeks, and this doesn't touch the scalp, but does leave you with slight roots, although now they blend in better. The highlights are also a bit orangey, but I've been using a silver shampoo and mousse, which has done wonders for removing the brassiness.
I need to get my highlights done again before I can get the platinum blonde that I want, so depending on your colour, you may need to give it a few shots before you can get the look you want, as dye does act differently because of your pregnancy hormones. My hair is really dry though, and I've been using more hot oil and super strength conditioner to keep it in good condition, and this has all worked out for me.
I am 27 weeks pregnant at the moment, and a lot of folk told me not to dye my hair, but my doctor, midwife and hairdresser all said it was fine, so I went with the professional advice. I didn't want awful pics of a frumpy mum in my baby's photo album. My sister has a 2 year old who is happy and healthy, and she used ammonia free colour in her pregnancy.
Other friends with kids had their highlights done, and again, this has all been fine.

i was told by my midwife it was fine and to look on this website which says its ok by the NHS
http://www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk/articles/article.aspx?articleid=949
if they were not safe to use during pregnany they would say on the box the dye comes in. Hair dyes have also been improved over the years and are much safer to use.
im 32 weeks pregnant and have already dyed my hair at 5 weeks pregnant, twice in the second trimester and dying my hair tomorrow and planning to dye it agen at 38 and a half weeks for the arrival of my baby boy. Also ive been told by my mam who was a hair dresser that its ok and my midwife say my baby is fine and healthy.
If you are going to dye your hair make sure you open lots of windows and doors so the fumes can escape quickly and cover your nose and mouth so you dont inhale them. I put a towel over my face and i cant smell a thing =]
Good Luck!

Yes. My best friend is a hair colourist and said that its not a problem. I am 22 wks pregnant and coloured my hair a couple of weeks ago it came out just fine. Make sure u do the skin test first tho as your skin and scalp will be more sensitive then normal. If that is fine then go ahead x x

Well first of all did you know that hair dye is carcinogenic!.the darker ones being the biggest culprits.Personally I'd give the dye a miss while you're pregnant and consider a herbal type after the birth.Sorry to scare you but they should come with health warnings in my opinion.

Usually it's safe. I did mine at 16 weeks and my doctor said they jsut ask that you wait until after 14 weeks. The reason is because there is no conclusive evidence saying that it does or doesn't harm the baby so they suggest that you wait until the vital organs are fully developed first. But, I would talk to your doctor to be safe.

YES! They used to think that it could harm the baby, but now the doctors say it is perfectly fine to color your hair, but you should make sure you do it in a well ventilated room with a window. The fumes are the only thing that could possibly harm you or your baby so just make sure not to lock yourself in your teeny bathroom while you do it. Good luck, I hope you look pretty, and Congrats on the baby.

I'm 17 weeks pregnant myself, and it's a yes/no answer all round really! Some people say yes, go for it! It depends how you feel. There is no scientific finding to show it harms baby!
So up to you, but i'd mention it to your doc or midwife first - see what they say!
Good luck xx

I'd probably wait until after the first trimester just to be on the safe side.

its perfectly safe. The old school dyes from the 70's were not good for a baby, but they have changed the formula now and they are just fine. And yes, I asked my dr about it too!!!
