Well the indicator phenolphtalein is prepared by dissolving a solid in alcohol, which is colorless by itself. If you place a few drops into an acidic solution it stays clear, and if you place it into a basic solution is will turn pink. The darker shade of pink the higher the pH of the solution. It will be a lighter shade of pink just beyond the equivalence point.

Phenolphthalein indicator solution transitions from clear in acidic solution to a bright pink in basic solution. The pH range for the transition is 8.2 - 10.0.

That means that, when you have a bright pink solution with phenolphthalein indicator, the solution is not neutral (pH = 7), but actually fairly alkaline (pH > 9).

For a while in high school, they used to neutralize sodium hydroxide with hydrochloric acid to the edge of the transition point. This made a salt (sodium chloride = table salt) water solution, and the teachers would let us each drink a tiny bit to prove it to us. Then they realized that phenolphthalein is a laxative -- the active ingredient in Ex Lax -- and stopped because too many kids were in the rest room for the remainder of the day! thought you might enjoy that little tidbit of info.
