I am a very over anxious person. I don't like sitting and I like to be able to do what I want when I want. My job has been very good to me in the fact that I am my own boss, so to speak, and I make my own schedule. (I am the Director of Sales for a country club). Anyway the hardest thing for me is meetings. When I go into a meeting, I always sit close to the door and I feel very overwhelmed. I feel like my face is burning and my heart is racing, my stomach hurts to the point I think I may have to run to the bathroom. I don't mind talking in front of people etc. it is just the point of having to sit on someone else time. Does this even make any sense? Anyway what are some techniques of things I can do to calm me down. It has gotten to the point where I will make up excuses to skip or get out early!!

i have ptsd and suffer similar problems and am a psy student they teach the best thing to do is before a metting do something you find to be exstremely relaxing or do some deep breathing
Now as for therapy slowy expose yourself to situation where you have to sit like go to a library and sit in a far uncrowded end for 5 minutes and increase it to 10 etc when you feel yourself getting anxious close your eyes and take some deep breaths and tell yourself this to well pass, when you can handle the library try somewhere more crowded after that place another place more crowded.
They say exposure therapy is the best so just going to the meeting and making yourself stay is actually the recommended therapy i know don't want to hear that but its true.

You need to use relaxation techniques. What are they? Methods you can use to help yourself relax. These techniques are Simple, Inexpensive and Effective. Relaxation techniques can help you relieve or prevent problems related to stress. You can learn to relax with some patience and practice. Be sure to:
GET ADVICE--talk with your health care provider about methods that may work best for you.
Set aside time every day
Find a quiet place
Be patient
How do you know you're relaxed? When your breathing and heart rate slow down and you feel calm.
Deep Breathing is an effective technique. Abdominal breathing is the key. Here's how
1. Sit or lie down
2. Place one hand on your abdomen
3. Breathe in slowly through your nose-you may want to count
as you inhale.
4.Concentrate on filling up your lower lungs with air. Your
abdomen should rise.
5. As you exhale slowly push out all the air from your lungs.
Your abdomen will fall. You may want to count.
Continue until you're calm and your breathing is slow and rhythmic. This takes just a few minutes and you can do it several times a day.
Progressive Muscle Relaxation, the goal is to release tension.
Here's How:
1.Sit or lie down. Close your eyes. Start with the muscles in your feet and calves.
2. Slowly tighten muscles for about 5 seconds. Relax for about 20-30 seconds.
3.Repeat step 2 for thights and buttocks, abdomen and chest, fingers and arms, shoulders and neck, face and head.
4.Finish by relaxing your whole body. Breathe deeply and slowly. Open your eyes. Allow about 15-20 minutes for this technique.
Visualization-create positive mental images to help reduce stress.
Here's how:
1. Close your eyes
2.Imagine a positive scene or event.
3. Take note of all the details, including scenery, smells, sounds, etc.
4.Do this until you become relaxed.
This technique takes only a few minutes, although you can do it for 20-25 minutes. Use it almost anywhere, sitting at your desk, waiting in line, etc.
Massage is relaxing and therapeutic. Massage yourself, get a professional massage. Learn some massage techniques yourself.
Here's how:
1.Glide palms of hands smoothly over the whole body.
2.Use thumps and fingertips to apply focused pressure on soles of feet, back and legs.
3.Grasp flesh and muscles, and gently knead areas od shoulders, backs and legs.
4.Use fingertips and palms to apply pressure to all parts of the body.
5.Gently tap the body with palms, fingertips and hands.
Mediation involves quieting your body and mind while focusing on a single word, phrase or image.
Find a time to mediate. Chose a position. Mediation may take some time to master. Be patient.
Yoga combines breathing, mediating and movement. There are many different types of yoga. Choose one you're comfortable with. Overall wellness is a balance of physical and mental health. It includes exercise, diet and a positive attitude. Don't rely on alcohol or other drugs.
Relaxation techniques are easy to learn and use. Relaxation will help you feel better inside and out. Good Luck.

You may have ADHD or Generalized Anxiety Disorder. If you go to the doc and are diagnosed with anxiety, you may be prescribed with Paxil to help you. Ritalin may also help, if you have trouble focusing. You may also just be claustrophobic. Do you feel enclosed or trapped when you're in meetings? Just tell your doc about it.
In the meantime, try clenching your hands into fists and then letting them go a few times while breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth. It's supposed to stop panic attacks before they start.
