In a way they are the same because you are paying rent either way. However, the difference is that a lease is a legally binding contract that you would sign and it would state for how long you had to live there(6 months or a year). If you break the contract by moving before your lease is up, you are legally bound to pay for the remaining months whether you live there or not. Straight renting is on a month by month basis.
I hoped this helps!

A lease generally implies a set amount of time during which you pay rent -- usually 6 months or a year.
For example, you can rent an apartment, and you can also sign a lease that specifies the same rent amount for a set period of time. Usually, the only difference between "for lease" and "for rent" is that the lease is for a set time, and the rent is month-to-month and the rate can go up at any time.

yes, whe it comes to apartments they are pretty much the same.
In general you lease a car and rent an apartment.
However, most apartments require a one year or six month commitment, also known as a lease. When you sign a lease agreement, you may not move out or stop paying the rent untill the lease is over.

They are the same really. My mom saw this one house she wanted to rent and the sign said (for lease). She called the number and she asked is the house for rent or for lease? The owner told her it was the same thing to not worry about it. =)

Very little difference, if any.
As commonly used, a lease is by written contract (usually for buildings or land) and rules for a relatively long time.
"To rent" is often used for shorter term agreements.
But legally, unless the jurisdiction creates a special terminology for a particular statute, the two terms are interchangeable.

renting means that you are paying money, but the owner is not you. leasing is paying money, but you are co-owners with the previous owner.
