Lucky bamboo actually prefer the soil because that is their natural state. They also receive more nutrients from the soil which results in an increased growth rate and a lusher looking plant.
Just make sure you create a well aerated soil and water it thoroughly when it becomes dry. Choose a course quick draining medium to plant your bamboo in and you won't have to worry about over watering.

eskie lover, I think you have lucky bamboo which is not even a bamboo confused with regular bamboo that spreads like a weed that you can't get rid of. ;)

My sister put lucky bamboo in soil and it died on her. I would put it with marbles and water like the other lady said and keep clean water consistent. That is how I take care of mine...

had it at least three years now, no problems...

I have bamboo all over my house but not in soil. I was told by the oriental man that I get all mine from to just put it in water with stones or marbles. Some of mine have sprouted and are up to the ceiling. I have even put the leaf part in water after the heavy stalk part died, and they are gettiting roots. He said to just leave them in the water and sooner or later they would get hard and form another stalk.

Confine it's roots! If you don't you will have it invade your lawn, your neighbor's lawn and your neighborhood. It grows and spreads like a weed with runners. You can grow it in the poorest soil, neglect it, fail to fertilize it and you will still get a forest of it. If you don't grow it in a patio container, but want to put it in the ground, plant the entire container in the ground to keep the roots confined.
