My ex-wife got onto my personal computer and went though and read very personal emails of mine. She is now prancing around with personal info (nothing illegal) acting very proud of herself.
I know it's illegal to open someone elses USPS mail. Is email treated the same? This was a huge violation of my privacy and it angers me that as far as I know, nothing can be done.

Is it illegal to read someone elses email without their consent?

Knowing your account information, password etc., gives her access to your e-mail, and would be treated the same as a piece of mail addressed to you both.

Stop the prancing and get a new account and password-it is the only way to stop this in the future.

Your personal and private life should not concern her anymore! Protect yourself.

Your ex-wife has no business being in your home going through your private things. Did you allow her into your home? I cannot tell you about the legality of her reading your email, but it is certainly ethically wrong. I would think that a court of law would back you if wanted to get an order to allow her in your home only when you are present and can monitor what she is getting into.

Email is not treated the same.

You can potentially sue her in civil court, for trespass to your personal property (computer and data). But it's not a crime.
