She's not the first to try to avoid the association people are making between "liberal" and "socialist".
If it were something new, that'd be one thing, but it's pretty clearly designed to be deceptive, since it's the same old liberal socialism. There's nothing new in substance.

The Progressive parties going into the 1920s had overspent, overreached, and practiced a totally unworldly brand of idealism that people in the United States were tired of then. Hopefully, we're already tired of Hilary Clinton, as the electorate of 1920 elected Warren G. Harding as a backlash against progressive politics - and he was probably the most venal president the US has ever had.

It's a bit of spin. No one wants to be pinned as liberal because that carries a bit of baggage, just as conservative carries it's own baggage. She feels that progressive is easier to spin to the middle.
You need to remember that at first these people play to the 20% of the populace that are the rabid followers that drive the parties. Eventually, if they WANT TO WIN they need their message to resonate with the moderates who think the rapid kooks that champion the extreme parts of the platform are all drinking kool aid and want to know what their latest selection will do for them and their lives.

Reagan made liberal a dirty word and Rush Limpdick helped. We've always had a progressive wing in the Democratic party, but personally I don't consider Hillary a progressive. This is a Hillary thing, not a liberal thing.
