We live in a canyon with a huge coyote problem because there is a wildlife preserve up the street from our subdivision. Our trash collection service issued us trash containers with heavy flip top lids which the coyotes would have to stand on their hind legs and have the strength of mathusala to open. We are also encouraged to keep our bins clean, inside the garage except for collection days and always keep the lids closed. My trash has not suffered a coyote attack since we got the new bins. Home improvement stores also sell these animal proof bins.

PS It is illegal in my area to shoot a coyote unless it is attacking. You have to call Fish and Game to capture and relocate them, which means they go right up the street to release them.

Until someone develops a locking garbage can, you can't. Coyotes are extremely smart and now that they have found the can........they will return often. If she is in rural area....real rural, you can hire a hunter to track and kill the animal. If the animal is in a semi rural of urban area it becomes the job of animal control. They might try to capture the animal (lotsa luck with a coyote) but more likely tell the homeowner to keep the garbage in the garage and bring it out when the garbage truck is coming down the road.

If she lives in a populated area, she needs to call Division of Wildlife and see if they can come in a trap or dart the coyotes and then have them relocated. If she lives in the country, most counties have predator control, that handles the habitual offenders. The Division of Wildlife will know about either in town or out of town.

Tell your client that the view is worth the trouble they will have with the local animals. That is the problem with us humans, we are always encroaching on some dumb animals habitat and then expect them to become genuises and know that we do not want them in our stuff!

Coyotes wont get into trash! They feed on live animals. What you might have are raccoons! They LOVE garbage or almost anything! They will take lids right off garbage cans!!!!

They are like roaches, very difficult to eliminate. If you are real patient you may get a rifle shot at them.

You need a really big dog... seriously, that's how farmers keep coyotes from eating their livestock.
