Men usually measure their self-esteem by (a) Job/Career, or (b) Their prowess in attracting members of the opposite sex. Women usually measure their self-esteem based on their relationships with men and other women and/or on their physical appearance. So a man's self-esteem is based largely on a sense of accomplishing goals (moving up the ladder, driving the expensive car, getting the hotties to go to bed with him) while a woman's self-esteem is based more on a sense of meaningful interactions with other people.

I think Troll Shark has it about right. Men tend to judge virtue more on acts, women more on character.

I also think pride is more important to a man than a woman. It's very important to a man's self-esteem that people around him consider him competent. Women care more about being loved.

I actually think this may be the reason you see Stockholm Syndrome more in women than men. Becoming a willing slave is more horrifying to a man, because he'd lose all pride in himself.

Edit: elisabeth s, I'd think that finding your natural face and body acceptable (as opposed to slathering on makeup to make yourself look "presentable" like you women do) would indicate HIGHER self-esteem, not lower.

I can’t believe it – I’m agreeing with Troll-Shark™ twice in the same day. Men tend to focus on what they do, while women focus on who they are. The more a man *does* good things, the better his self-esteem, while the better a woman *is*, the better her self-esteem.

I think men fret about less then a woman does. But all in all we are a lot alike. Someone can comment on a womans weight and we freak out, but you do that to a man and he may shrug it off with a joke, but he did hear it and it probably did bother him. Just not as much as a woman.

I think it occurs much less in men than women. Often the ugliest, nastiest, most obnoxious guys will hit on the most women. Those are guys who probably SHOULD have self esteem issues, but don't.

I think men when they get their feelings hurt tend to internalize it more than a women does! If I get knocked down a peg or two I just let it go!
