Who is more likely to kill one of your children? An atheist or a religious person?

I can tell you right now that all those people in the Twin Towers were not killed by atheists; neither were the ones hung by the Ku Klux Klan; neither were the girls burnt in Salem.
When are you going to realize who the truly dangerous/evil people are?

Salem, with anyone doing a real study of events, would conclude that it was a conflict between Salem Proper and Salem Township, with the backdrop of Paris's election as preacher. Considering men and women were killed, and all of them were opposed to the election as Paris as preacher, is no coincidence. It was Paris's daughter who got the ball rolling. The majority of those killed were old widows. I wrote a 30 page essay on the topic in college, and I can tell you with reasonable authority that religion was the impetous to deep political and socio-economic changes going on in the area. It was not a political vaccum, but a area going through the dynamic shift from rural to urban.

Religious people have been invloved in small scale homicide, and large scale homicide.

However, I think you forget that the greatest murderers of the 20th century were athiests. Mao, Stalin, Hitler, Ho Chi Min, Castro, Idi Amin...all athiests.

In today's world, either person. Anyone using god or religion to kill others isn't religious, they're demented. It's a strange thing how people seem to know instinctively that killing other people is wrong. The people who manage to not pay attention to their inner voice are the ones that are dangerous, being religious or an atheist has nothing to do with it in my opinion.

Yes, religion played a major role in humanity's history of ruthless killings and brutal oppression, but....

so has atheism. People regardless of religion, sexual orientation, gender, age (there has been child killers) kill for many reasons.

If we wipe out religion then there will still be wars, there will be murders, rapes, there will still be sexual harassment, school shootings.....

The only way to have peace in this world is to do what Tom Cruise did in "Minority Report."

I really don't think that religion is the problem. Remember how the Japanese killed themselves for their country during WW2? They didn't kill themselves for God, but for nationalism.

What is dangerous about religion is how religion is interpreted. Religious fanatics are the cause of events, related to religion, that was evil and dangerous in history.

Many, many people have died throughout history in the name of religion. Today is no exception. Today Islam is the cause of much violence in the world. In the past, during the crusades, the Spanish inquisition, the Salem witch burnings, the Catholic church was behind it. Even the Mormons had massacres. Building fear in people's minds and the desire for power and control has much to do with this violence.
