I think people watch reality tv becasue of the drama of people fighting and arguing. I think that people like to escape from their own lives for a bit...although honestly, you can do with all kinds of tv...maybe people are just interested in the way others live, like a big sociology project. That's my best answer.

I have to disagree with you. Personally, I think I learn by watching everyday people make mistakes or discoveries about themselves.
Confidence is the one common component in all reality television. You must have confidence in your self to win on the show AND in life.
I'm sure many people watch reality TV merely for entertainment and they take it at face value. I really get into it though. Big Brother this season is a fascinating study in how humans relate to one another when they want to trust, but can't. It could just be me, but I like to look at the psychological side of why the contestants are doing what they're doing.
Sure there's editing and wannabe actors, what have you, but I think I'm smart enough to see past that and into what the participants real motives are.
You are right that some reality lives aren't anymore interesting than any random person. For me, I like to watch. I like to see people's thought processes and what the consequences may be. I understand not everyone might find it fascinating, but I do.

I do watch Realty TV.
My life is exciting but watching Realty makes it must better tv. Why watch movies or series. ITs just fiction. Realty is real life with a twist.
Why do we watch Soap Opera's? That is really close to real life too. Everyone has a Soap Opera going on in their families.

That's exactly why reality TV works -- because people are trying to escape their own lives!!

I have never liked "reality" shows. They are NOT reality, they are game shows-the people are contestants, and the winner gets a bunch of money. The actual reality shows are: American Justice, Cold Case Files, Forensic Files, LA Forensics, to name a few.

I've hated every reality show ever made. They are utter drivel, and completely not worth watching.
