Windows. The IT world is dominated by windows based PCs. over 90% run some form of windows, while MAC, which is doing better, is only at 10%.
More importantly you should check with your school and see what they support before buying anything.

If your school tells you what you will be developing, follow their guidelines. If you plan to make a serious career of application development, choose what you like.
Web design is not very platform-specific. In other words, you design for browsers not for operating systems. In this area, Firefox is the fastest growing browser due to the security flaws of Internet Explorer, the failure of Microsoft to conform to WWW3 web standards and the customization features of Firefox. For web design, you must learn raw coding and Adobe software (Dreamweaver, Flash, Fireworks, etc.). Although Adobe originally designed their software for Mac and the printing-publishing industry (which has always been dominated by Apple) they now make almost all of their software for both Windows and Mac.
Windows application development is for users of Win-Tel platform and Windows operating systems which are the vast majority of home and small to medium sized business computers.
Mac application development is for UNIX based Mac platform and Mac OS X operating system. The core application development is in C++ language which is also the core language for all UNIX systems. Most high level government and military computer systems are UNIX because it is the most powerful, adaptable and secure system.
In the film industry, any system can be used to render effects but for most of the noteworthy productions (Lord of the Rings, Toy Story, etc.) computer animation is done on Sun Microsystems and Apple computers which share the solidity of UNIX as their base.
You should also consider the future and where the jobs will be opening up. Although more developers are employed today doing Windows work, the market may be saturated. The market for Mac development is quickly growing so there are more jobs created daily in that area.

Illustrator is a good gig - Microsofts Visio is another - these run on a Windows XP without a problem.
If you are taking modular course material then this will no doubt be in the Windows arena.
The Mac may have a good, stable OS with great graphics capability the wider open-end market is definetly Windows.
Incidently, Mac can read Windows and Windows can read Mac though to what lengths these paramters go I am unsure - I found the Mac too expensive to test the theory.
