With ANY messenger, if you never click on any links that are sent to you (especially when they are sent to you when off-line) and you scan with your A-V any files that are transfered to you, you should be fine.

yes in both cases! Use trillian - can use both and be online with both at the same time without the hassle. Trillian is much much more secure and safe.
