Get rid of affirmative action and EMPLOYERS should stop looking at skin color and START looking at qualifications!

I actually think the opposite. I think the United States still racially discriminates people, as an Asian I still feel that way. I've been to Europe before and most of them are very open and nice. They accept our culture and who we are. Where if i'm here in U.S., I've always get rude comments from people about my eyes, my features, and I can see people's negative attitude towards me. People here don't really appreciate other races, and still consider a white supremest country. If you live in the Southern part of the U.S., you can see why racial discrimination is still an issue.

We live in a country that thrives on the belief that all men are created equal. But while this in theory may be true, there has existed and continue to exist those individuals who believe that to the contrary, based upon the color of ones skin a stigma of inferior and superior should be placed on a people. And it was this belief that allowed to exist an unparalleled form of barbarism we've come to know as slavery. A form of repression and impoverishment that has as of yet to be rectified either through reparations or equal rights. The sooner we acknowledge that discrimination exist and that at this time those programs such as affirmative action are designed to level an unleveled playing field, the sooner we can begin to heal this wound. And for the record, affirmative action has benefited white women far more than it has any black man or woman.

Two very distinct questions. Let's look at both:

Why we should look to get past racial discrimination issues is because several people are still affected by what they see and make decisions for work accordingly. My resume kicks open doors simply on the strength and breath of knowledge I have needed to use in my profession. I have worked for fortune 100 companies, top consulting firms and for government entities. Nothing on my resume points to my ethnicity and during a phone interview I show that I am as skilled as my resume hints that I am. I've seen the shudder that goes through the interviewer when they were expecting a 180 lb. white guy and a 230lb black man is standing there waiting for his interview. I know I have lost jobs because of who I am and the fact that I don't fit the office culture. I have watched a company to their own peril hire another person to manage their I.T. department, Heard the stories of how he hopelessly destroyed it through mismanagement and then grudgingly need to hire me as a consultant to fix the damage. I took the job because paying me 375% more than they would have needed to if I were hired directly heals several hurt feelings. I know I am not a fluke. There are several highly skilled people in my field who are frozen out of the best jobs in California simply because we don't match a companies physical ideal for their staff.

How to fix the problem is more complex. We keep doing a lot of what we're doing. See that people are trained and that those who are skilled regardless of race are hired and promoted. When it comes down to it, we're all aiming for the same goals. Making sure we all have the same chance to get there is all anyone asks.

Education right from the beginning. From the day of birth. WE ARE ALL EQUAL. It still shocks me that there are so many "ignorant" people in this world who deem it necessary to make racial slurs. Good grief, this is the 21st century! With all the hurt that has gone on in our history we should have learned by now that the "separation" of our "races" only continues to weaken us. What do the people think they gain by making ugly remarks against other races? To be quite honest, I don't like people knowing that I am German, simply because of the evil still attached to it. I don't agree, nor will I ever agree with racial discrimination. God made us all equal...to deny that, is ignorance on your part.

One way to improve racial relations would be for blacks to reserve accusations of discrimination for true cases of discrimination. The d-word is used in any and every situation, and it is unfortunately beginning to sound like a cop out, and excuse, rather than a valid complaint.

Unfortunately, when TRUE discrimination occurs, it is a matter of ignorance on the part of the discriminator, and there is little that can be done about it.

I believe our best chance for improvement is through education, or rather, the lack of education. What I mean by that is simply that children don't magically become racist. It would never occur to most children on their own that one race is superior to another. Therefore, any racist leanings that a person develops are the result of someone, probably a parent or other adult, making flippant comments.

However, the black population in general isn't doing much to help the stereotypes that have been formed about them... Don't provide justification for the bigotry that some parents inadvertently foster in their children.

We have not improved them.

They have remained just as deplorable and broken, and have arguably gotten worse.

The only difference is that we MAY be focusing our collective hatred and prejudice on a different racial group in the past 6 years than we did in the 60 before that.

improve the standard of living of poor people, better education, better job opportunities.
No handouts or free goverment assistance
That is one of the most important thing that creates animosity between different groups
You will never eliminate narrow minded people who just hate out of indoctrination or ignorance

Why should we? Because skin color, or religion, or race, or gender has NOTHING to do with what kind of a person they are. I try to judge people on their individual merit, not by anything else.

Try not making it an issue. It shouldn't be one. :)
