You'll have to Google for better information on this one, but I remember reading about a "green burial", where the body is merely wrapped in a shroud--no embalming, no casket-- and consigned to the earth. There are several "green burial" cemeteries in the US, and from what the article said, they require special permits to be allowed, though private land has been donated for these sites. "Earth to earth" is the philosophy, and by-passing the entire funeral 'industry' would appear to be the major benefit. I know of no religion that would deny this way of burial...the need for $10,000 bronze coffins has nothing to do with anything but profits.

Donate your body to medical science. They come to the funeral home and specially prepare the body, then the family has a funeral quickly after death, and the university or some other teaching facility comes to the funeral home and picks up the body. The family gets the body back for burial or cremation after about 2 years. Talk about a gift that keeps on giving!

I wonder. I want to be buried right in the ground...dust to dust. No embalming. Or out to sea. But I don't think I can. Is it dangerous to bury a human directly in the ground?

You can pre-arrange to offer your body for medical use - get your parts recycled after death, and the rest of your body used to teach medical students.
