Childless myself, I see your point. However, one has to see education as an investment in the overall community. Also, be aware that a good school district will raise the value of all property in that district, including yours.

Actually, The Weekly Standard (Bill Kristol's "neo-con" magazine) recently had an article discussing the idea of abolishing public education. I didn't read it, and I'm certainly not saying that you suggested anything like that.
I only mention it as tangentially relevant to the general topic of "let's look at the present system and see if it needs changing." For what it's worth. I'm not endorsing it.
As for my own opinion, I complain an awful lot about "macro" tax policy on principle (I have issues with people's attitudes towards wealth), but deep down I have not focused on exactly where all my tax money goes item-by-item. I suppose I just consider taxes an overall "fair deal" for the society I live in, and I would probably cry for a month if I really considered, line by line, where the money was going. I have some awareness and sympathy for folks whose taxes make it hard to make ends meet.
Another long and meandering answer. Are you sorry you revealed yourself to me? Ha-Ha.

I'm with you on that one. It's true that the current tax system is messed up and most of the young tax payers without children and who've already finished school are still paying for public schools for other people's children. Not only that, you'll continue to pay their school your entire life even if you don't have any children if you let the tax system stay as it is.
Paying for school is just a minor issue. What's major is the Social Security and Medicare tax - the FICA tax that is taken from your paycheck before you can use it. The Social Security and Medicare will be the largest tax burden on the young tax payers because there are less tax payers supporting the baby boomer generation that is beginning to retire, and it will get worse in a few years. What's worse is that the younger generation of tax payers will never get their social security paycheck because there isn't enough money in there even to pay for the retiring baby-boomers.
Vote Ron Paul if you care about your taxes and how the economy will effect your life. See his stance on taxes: http://www.ronpaul2008.com

Quite simply its an investment in the future. While I agree that many things need to be fixed within the education system, i fully support public schools, and would even pay more in taxes if it continued through the University level.
"We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."
Not only do our tax dollars go to defending the country but also to promote the general welfare.
"A well educated populace is key to a democracy."
Taxes are dues paid to have the standard of living that we have now. Not only did your parents pay taxes to provide for your education the entire country did, compare your taxes to that of private school tuition fees. Education would cost alot more if everyone paid individually, just as the cost of paving the street in front of your house would cost more if only those that lived on your street had to pay for it. We have the lowest tax rate of any industrialized nation. Thomas Jefferson was a huge proponet for free education, establishing the University of Virginia as a free University to anyone that could handle secondary education mentally, as opposed to only having those that could afford it, thus building a meritocracy instead of merely having an aristocracy. It balances the playing field a bit and builds the intellectual capital of the country.
Or we could simply stop paying and forcing kids to go to school, so we can deal with even more idiots on a daily basis except now, more than likely they will be violent idiots as well.

So what you are saying is that citizens should have a right to pay only the taxes that they agree with.
Think about this my right wing little grasshopper.
As a pacifist,I will refuse to pay any taxes thgat go to fund the military.Let war mongers like you pay for it.
Next ,I am against capital punishment so refuse to pay any tax money to fund the killing of others.
I am not interested in arts, museums, historical sites, and everything like that (Not really but for this post) so I refuse to pay any taxes to support these things.
I am a law abiding person with a gun so have need for police etc.I refuse to pay any taxes to support any and all law enforcement.
Even YOU I suspect get the point by now but maybe not.

Because having an educated society benefits us all. In the first place we need future workers here to fund with their tax dollars your care, national security, etc. Plus to give us the best employees for our companies we need the best education and that ensures that you receive better products. My grandparents were conservatives and definitely got no direct benefit in paying the school taxes in our areas when they sent me to parochial schools but they knew the benefits to the country of having our citizens educated.

Once you get down to it on a very basic level you are participating in something called the social contract. you as an individual live in a society and benefit/contribute to that society. sorry the ME first generation has such a problem with children.

Good education benefits the whole society including you.Bad or worse NO education has horrible effects and leads to more crime and other types of misery..It's like do you prefer to pay for a decent educational system or do you prefer to pay for more welfare or crime prevention and law enforcement.Good education is an investment,it's not a gift.Everyone benefits so everyone pays a share
