Pulling of the hair will not make it grow. According to my hairdresser, pulling or constantly "stressing" the hair in anyway will cause damage. This style will cause breaking, scalp irritating and split ends.

Any kind of tight hairstyle can make your hair break off and fall out. Some women even have receeding hairlines from wearing their hair in tight braids all the time.

I do not know, but I have read that it causes thinning hair later on in life to wear hair in styles that pull it tight, such as pony tails. It places stress on roots/hair follicles. I'm wondering if braids might fall into that category.
