Most people think it is harmless, the truth is that it causes our children to become desensitized to violence and when violence is portrayed in cartoons, it is often deemed as heroic or cool. Violence has become the cool thing and it sells. It is just like sex in the media, the more desensitized our society becomes to it the more vulgar our behavior becomes, and it is considered normal and cool. The things people think are acceptable today, would have been considered monstrous 50 years ago. It makes you wonder what society will be like 50 years from now. You'll probably be able to pick up a hooker on every street corner legally. T.V. has brainwashed everyone, not just children.

At the risk of differing from the other responses I must add that cartoons, movies and music do not dictate how the children will grow up. Every society known has stories of cataclysm, destruction, and creation. Cartoons are not believed to be recollections of actual events and therefore they are excessively less harmful to the psyche than religion (of which Tom & Jerry, Thundercats, etc. would be jealous of the bloodletting bestowed on the charcters in these tall tales).

To answer your question, my opinion is that the cartoon violence is amusing and interesting and thought provoking to its supposed audience.

BTW: Japanese cartoons are exceedingly violent and you can't find nearly as much violence in their society. Just a thought.

If children intervened and mediated more in the making of cartoons that will ultimately be directed to them, we would not see that much violence and racy sexual imagery.

The problem is, cartoons are made by ADULTS, for children. Thankfully, some creators have finally understood the value of children's minds and how (sadly) important the tv is to their understanding of the world around them.

For instance, i was fed marriage and love relationships through the famous Disney Princesses' movies. They taught us the importance of getting married. Actually, back then, marrying was the most important goal in a woman's life and darn, i wanted to be a successful woman, like my hero princesses.
Also, cartoon characters we constantly getting in love and chasing their loved one around....which is fine, but kids don't really care about that, our life does not revolve around finding a mate. You could always identify the "sexy" cartoon character: an overly sexual woman or animal, generally wearing little clothing and seducing everyone. We all laughed, but got a very wrong idea of what a woman is.

Kids need more adventure and magic, and less sex-craving messages and violent behavior. Sure, violence is fun but it is a way of telling kids it is ok to reach your goals through abusive behavior.

Would violence be perfectly ok at home? no, but it is on the tv, and the tv is a part of our home. Really sad.

I haven't watched too many cartoons lately, since my kids and grandkids are grown, but I understand there is a lot of violence displayed in something that was originally designed to be funny and entertaining. I remember watching cartoons at the movies when I was young, and about the only violent thing I observed was some of the characters getting flattened against a wall -- silly stuff like that. But now there is a lot of mayhem and killing, not only in cartoons but in video games for children. I feel that sends the wrong message to young, impressionable minds -- that this is the way things are supposed to be, and that's very, very wrong. Bugs Bunny and Donald Duck didn't send that kind of message in my day.

Bad. Bad, but if the child has an active imagination, like I did, it is no different than reading a book. But they should still cut it down. It installs a disrespect for humanity, and at least a book has educational benefits. When and if they are respectful enough, then they can see all the violent cartoons they want. But until then, no. TV is bad for the human brain, anyway. Just turn the thing off, or block everything except Discovery, National Geographic, and the news.

Personally, I think the very graphic violence in cartoons and video games has to be adversly affecting children. I don't mean the old Buggs Bunny type of thing...I mean the ones where graphics are so vividly real and depict people attacking each other, ripping off someone's head with blood splattering everywhere, guns, etc. Cannot be good for developing minds.

I remember the old Woody Woodpecker cartoons were violent, too. He used to tie someone up and run around bonking him on the head.

Frequently, children watching these cartoons or violent video games think they can commit acts of violence and without consequences.

Sad, sad state of the world today…

My brothers and I used to watch a Bugs Bunny/ Daffy Duck cartoon about Rabbit season/ Duck season. The entire cartoon was pretty much about the two of them fighting, and then Elmer Fudd would shoot Daffy in the face with a shotgun from close range. We thought it was the funniest thing we had ever seen. We were literally rofl. I never shot either one of my brothers in the face with a shotgun, but we did whack each other in the head with a skillet just to see what it felt like. There were shotguns in the house, within easy reach. We just chose to use the skillet; because we had better sense than to use a shotgun on another human. I believe that was because of the way our parents raised us. Guns don't pull their own triggers. As far as graphic is concerned...there is more graphic detail on the streets of Detroit than there is on television. Should we outlaw Michigan?

i think its nothing to get too worried about, producers are more aware of its consequences now more than ever.

And as for "what happened to the old cartoons". Tom and Jerry is an OLD cartoon and is one of the most violent ones i know tbh. Cats trying to BLOW UP mice? and dogs shooting cats?

Thinking bout it, FAIRY TALES are violent, how would you feel if someone ATE ur grandmother? or tried to COOK and EAT ur children

I was raised on it and never dropped an anvil on someone's head. Kidding aside, there is plenty of research that suggests it leads to aggressivity. But, there are other contributing factors as well, name the home environment and parenting. I don't find cartoon vioolense especially problematic or troublesome.
