Try the "His Dark Materials" books by Phillip Pullman. I haven't read them, but they are in a similar vein to Harry Potter and they are meant to be good. They are sitting on my bookshelf to read next. Some other ones to try...
* The Tomorrow Series by John Marsden (the adventures of a group of kids after their country is invaded)
* The Tales of the Otori by Lian Hearn (about a Japanese boy learning to become a warrior)
* The Shopaholic Books by Sophie Kinsella - just funny

Good luck

I'm currently reading Janet Evanovich's books. They're pretty good so far. I especially like the Stephanie Plum detective series. It's like mystery, romance, and comedy in one.
