My kids are only 3 and 4, but I require them to pick their toys back up after playing with them so that they're ready for when they have to do it at school.
I call it "team-work time" where we all get together in one room and help each other put stuff up. One kid gets a plastic WalMart bag for to pick up trash, the other one focuses on toys or books and I just coach from the sideline. And, should one of them decide to be difficult and not cooperate, I don't even break a sweat and I remind them that there won't be any treats (like candy/ice cream desserts) for little boys who aren't part of the team. ;)
And, no money yet. I'll start that when they can conceptualize money more clearly.

My sons (14 & 17) want too much! I pay $10 for lawn mowing (small yard) and $5 for cleaning the litter box. Those are the most frequently done chores. I pay per chore rather than an allowance so that I can get each chore done. They don't do very many, just when they want something. The 17 works now so he doesn't need to earn my money any more. :(

The kids have a few chores. They used to take turns, but they preferred sticking with one type, so right now, my daughter sweeps the kitchen and bathroom and mops once a week. My son straightens up and vacuums the living room. He also usually takes out the trash.
They don't get "paid" for their chores, just as I don't get paid for cooking, chauffering, doing the rest of the cleaning or doing the laundry. They do, however get an allowance with the condition that they have kept up with their chores during the week.

The only chore my kids have is they have to keep their rooms clean. Mine are 11 and 12. If I am sick my daughter washes dishes and can cook a few things. My son will pick up and is able to take out trash....
I give them 20 bucks a week. If not I would have to buy a game and they cost more... ha ha

My son is 12 and he has to empty the dishwasher, take out the garbage, and sometimes he mows the lawn or vacuums the house. He doesn't get an allowance. But then he pretty much gets anything he wants.

I have a 15 year old and an 11 year old. They do their own laundry, dishes, dog poop duty, clean house. Well, they do just about everything. I did not have kids for no reason ya know. ;) J/K
Anyway, it teaches them how to independent and responsible.

my kids are grown and gone but when they were home they did the following:
dishes
bedrooms
living room
bathroom and we tried to give them an allowance-sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't but the allowance isn't the important thing, teaching them how to work is what's important
