I suppose, theoretically, if the baby were endowed with super-human strength and if the mom had a severly crippling case of osteoporosis...
No. If the mom is healthy, it takes a lot of force to break ribs, force which a newly forming baby cannot exert. Sometimes those kicks feel pretty hard from the mom's standpoint, but a baby's punches and kicks are actually quite feeble. Think about holding a newborn baby against your chest - could that baby summon enough strength to kick you hard enough from the outside to even bruise you? No.

kick them - yes.
break them? I doubt it, but anything is possible, I guess, given the variables of mother's make up, bone density etc and position at the time and size of baby etc etc - I'm sure there is a case of somewhere.
My neighbour certainly had her ribs severely bruised from a kick that still pained her a few months after the birth :-(
I wouldn't worry about it if it hasn't happened to you or anyone you know - I would get checked out with the doc if you fear it might have.
Good luck.

I did not believe it but a friend of mine who is super tiny like 102 lbs when she got pregnant, and her baby (8.9) did fracture her rib at 8 months but i dont think it happens very often and the dr. also said that it probably had something to do with the way she was laying when it happened
But like i said she is the ONLY person i ever heard of having that happent to her

I don't think so, mine had kicked my ribs until I thought that they were broken, but they were just bruised. That hurts just as much as a break.

I had jokingly questioned that when I was pregnant. I personally haven't heard of any moms-to-be getting broken ribs.
